What is Deafblindness?

What is Deafblindness?

Deafblindness is the loss of sight and hearing to the point where your communication, mobility and ability to access information are affected. It is estimated that 400,000 people in the UK are deafblind, and it is particularly likely to affect us as we get older.

How can we help?

Deafblind NI supports people who have any level of sight and hearing loss to live the lives they want. We help by making connections, building confidence and increasing independence. Living with combined sight and hearing loss can be frightening and isolating, but our team of experts is here every step of the way to reassure, advise or to simply be someone to talk to if there is no one else. Our wellbeing and emotional support service is also available to help you through particularly difficult times.

We offer a wide range of support to suit individual needs, including befrienders who can contact you regularly for support and companionship. Or, if you’re looking for simple ways to keep in touch with friends and family, our technology team can give you useful hints and tips for how best to make the most of your phone, computer or tablet.

You can also join our regular social groups via telephone to chat to other people living with deafblindness across the UK.

Our work makes a huge difference to people like Janet, who has Glaucoma, cataracts and wears two hearing aids. Janet’s confidence used to be very low and she didn’t like leaving home. After receiving support from Deafblind NI, Janet has taken part in lots of different activities and has met other people who are deafblind. She said she “loves receiving regular phone calls and if there is anything that I am having difficulty doing I can ask for advice and assistance”.
